Monday, February 13, 2012: Sony recently hinted that it may launch smartphones and tablets based on the Vita operating system. The Sony PS Vita gaming console is based on the Vita operating system.
Sony's new CEO Kazuo Hirai, who is yet to take charge, said that the company had designed the operating system to be expandable to these other devices, according to AV Watch. According to deputy president, Sony, the smartphone apps would be coming soon to Vita, via PlayStation Suite.
Hirai said that Vita OS is a mobile platform which is not just focussed on gaming. "If you're asking if we've made it [Vita's OS] in a way that's expandable, so that it's possible to apply to smartphones and tablets on top of achieving the high responsiveness we need for gaming devices -- it is possible," said Yoshio Matsumoto, senior vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment. He also said, that the company is not necessarily applying the OS to smartphones and tablets at present, but he did specify that the OS has been designed with expandability in mind.
It seems that we will soon see smartphones and tablets from Sony running the Vita operating system.
